Your CNY Campaign Starts in December

Search for “Chinese New Year marketing Malaysia” and you will find plenty of festive ideas. Your campaign starts with a harder question: what can you sell, deliver and support before the holidays?

For Chinese New Year marketing in Malaysia, December is the time to build that plan. January is for learning and scaling what works. By February, your ads, delivery promises and holiday coverage should already be in place.

Whether you run a shop in Johor Bahru, a service business in Kuala Lumpur or sell to customers in Singapore, the aim is the same: make it easy to choose you before the festive rush.

Chinese New Year Marketing Malaysia: When CNY falls

Chinese New Year falls on Saturday, 6 February 2027, with the second day on Sunday, 7 February. Malaysia’s official 2027 public holiday schedule lists both dates. Check the rules that apply to your state, staff and business before setting your opening hours.

Work back from the date customers need their order, not just from the holiday itself. A gift box may need packing and delivery. A restaurant may need bookings and deposits. A salon may need to fill slots before staff take leave. Each business has a different last useful date for a sale.

Also check your suppliers’ closure dates and any courier deadlines. If you serve Singapore customers from JB, confirm the delivery area, currency and cross-border arrangements before you promise a date. Put those details on the page customers see before they order.

December-to-February campaign calendar

Use December to prepare, January to test and improve, and early February to fulfil orders and guide last-minute buyers.

December: build the offer and the route to sale

Choose one main goal: orders, bookings or qualified enquiries. Pick a product or service you can reliably deliver, then set a clear offer and a realistic end date. Check stock, margins, staff leave and supplier lead times before you write the ad.

Next, build the route from post to purchase. Add prices where practical, delivery zones, collection options and an honest deadline.

Set up tracking before launch. Use a distinct campaign link or enquiry tag and record where each lead came from. Test the full journey on a phone, including the form, payment link and confirmation message. See Xwork’s guide to turning social media activity into sales for more on that handoff.

As an illustrative example, a JB bakery could use December to agree on its hamper range, photograph the actual contents and ask its courier about festive cut-offs. It can then publish a simple order page instead of asking every buyer to wait for a menu in their inbox.

January: learn, then put more behind the winners

Launch a few useful pieces of content and small ad tests. Compare one message about the gift itself with another about ease of ordering. Keep the audience and offer clear enough that you can tell what changed. Review enquiries, orders and fulfilment capacity together, not likes alone.

Google’s 2022 retail guide says: “Search interest accelerates three to five weeks ahead of both cultural and sales-based shopping festivals.” The analysis used regional Google Trends data from July 2020 to December 2021 across several markets and festival types. It is useful context, not a CNY-specific forecast for Malaysia in 2027.

For a 6 February holiday, that window points roughly to early January as a sensible time to be ready. It does not mean every customer waits until then. Use your own sales and enquiry data to choose when to increase spend.

Send a helpful update to people who have agreed to receive your emails. Share gift ideas, booking dates or delivery details instead of repeating the same discount. Xwork’s email marketing guide covers list care and campaign planning. Give readers an easy way to opt out and honour their choices.

February: meet the promise and close the loop

As deadlines approach, replace vague urgency with facts: the last order date, collection hours and items still available. Pause ads for products you cannot fulfil. If delivery has closed but pickup remains open, say so on both the ad and the landing page.

During the closure, let people know when they can expect a reply. After reopening, follow up on requests, reconcile orders and review results. Note what sold, where questions piled up and what to change.

What happens to ad costs

Ad costs can change around CNY, but there is no single reliable price increase that applies to every Malaysian campaign.

Google and Meta use auctions, and the price you pay can vary with competition, audience, placements, ad quality and campaign choices. Demand may increase in a festive period, but that does not guarantee a rise in your cost per click or cost per enquiry. Watch your own account rather than planning around a made-up holiday benchmark.

Measure the cost of a useful outcome

Start with the amount you can spend while still meeting your margin. Then track spend, clicks, enquiries, qualified enquiries and actual orders. Cost per enquiry is spend divided by enquiries; cost per order is spend divided by orders. These are different measures, and neither tells you profit on its own.

For example only, if a KL florist spends RM600 and receives 30 enquiries, its cost per enquiry is RM20. If six become orders, the ad cost per order is RM100. That is not a market benchmark. The florist must compare that RM100 with the margin on those orders, plus other costs, before deciding whether to scale.

Review the numbers by product and channel. A more expensive enquiry may be worthwhile if it leads to a larger order. Allow time for buyers to respond before judging a test, and avoid changing every variable at once.

Keep a reserve for a strong offer or a change in stock. Move budget only when you have enough useful data and the team can handle the extra demand. Creative beyond red and gold

Strong CNY creative shows a real reason to buy, not just a festive colour scheme.

Start with the customer’s job. Are they sending a gift to a client, planning a reunion meal or booking an appointment before visiting family? Show the product in that setting and answer the question that might stop them from buying.

For an illustrative KL catering campaign, a short video could show how a reunion meal is packed and labelled. The caption could explain serving size, pickup area and order cut-off. A still image could show the actual menu. Both give a buyer something useful to act on.

Make the offer easy to understand

Use one main message per ad: what it is, who it helps and what to do next. If the offer has limits, place them close to the claim. For a gift set, show the contents and whether a card is included. For a service, show the available location and booking terms.

Use language your audience understands. English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese may each suit different customers, but do not assume one message speaks for every community. Have a fluent person review translations and cultural references. Avoid treating a festival greeting as a substitute for a clear offer.

Milieu Insight’s 2024 Lunar New Year study found that 48% of its Malaysian respondents intended to spend more for the holiday. Its Malaysian sample was 1,000 people who intended to celebrate, surveyed in October 2023. This is historical intent, not actual spending or a prediction for 2027. Use it as a reminder to test value at different price points, not to assume all buyers want a premium hamper.

For a JB business serving both local and Singapore buyers, make the practical details visible in each version: where to collect, which currency applies and whether delivery crosses the border.

Who handles enquiries while you’re closed?

Assign a named owner, a backup and a clear reply plan before your team goes on leave.

List the channels customers actually use: WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, email and your website form. Decide which will be monitored, when, and by whom. If nobody will monitor a channel, say so. A friendly away message is better than a promise no one can keep.

Set up the holiday handoff

Write an away message that states your closure dates, when replies will resume and where customers can find prices or order details. If someone is available for urgent issues, define what counts as urgent and how to reach them. Test the message from a separate phone before the holiday.

For an illustrative salon, the message might say: “Thanks for contacting us. We are closed from 6 to 8 February and will reply from 9 February. Please tell us what service you need, and our team will get back to you.” Replace the dates with your own and only offer booking slots that staff can confirm.

For common questions, prepare approved answers about stock, prices, delivery and refunds. A simple away message may be enough; a more complex business may need a chatbot or an AI-assisted flow. Either way, give customers a route to a person and set limits on what the system can promise. Review Xwork’s WhatsApp automation options or explore CODE/RAVEN’s enquiry automation.

Test unusual cases as well as easy ones: an out-of-stock item, a cancellation and a question in another language. Store only the information needed for the follow-up, and tell staff where open conversations are recorded. After reopening, work through them in order of urgency and confirm that each customer received a response.

Chinese New Year Marketing Malaysia: Campaign Checklist

Use this checklist to make sure your campaign can sell, deliver and respond before you increase spend.

  • Set the goal: Choose orders, bookings or qualified enquiries and name the person who owns the result.
  • Check the offer: Confirm price, margin, stock, terms and any limit on quantities.
  • Map the dates: Work back from 6 February 2027 and check staff leave, supplier closures and delivery cut-offs.
  • Build the path: Test every ad, link, form, payment step and WhatsApp button on mobile.
  • Prepare the creative: Show real products, clear benefits and one next step. Review language and cultural details.
  • Set the budget: Record your spend and track enquiries, qualified leads and orders against your own margins.
  • Cover the inbox: Set an away message, assign an owner and backup, and test escalation for issues.
  • Plan the close: Pause unavailable offers, follow up after reopening and save what you learned.

Run through the list with the people who pack, sell and reply. A campaign is not ready just because the artwork is approved. It is ready when the business can keep the promise in the ad.

Chinese New Year Marketing Malaysia: FAQ

The best CNY campaign answers practical questions before customers have to ask them.

When should I start my CNY campaign?

Start planning in December 2026 for CNY on 6 February 2027. Use December to prepare your offer and tracking, January to test and improve, and early February to focus on fulfilment. Your own stock and booking deadlines may require an earlier start.

How much should a Malaysian SME spend on CNY ads?

There is no universal amount. Start with what your margin and cash flow can support, set a test budget and measure the cost of qualified enquiries or orders. Increase spend only when the results make sense and you can fulfil the extra demand.

Do I need a discount for Chinese New Year marketing in Malaysia?

No. Convenience, a thoughtful gift, clear delivery options or a useful bundle can be a strong offer without a discount. Choose a benefit your customers value and be clear about any terms. Test it against a simple price offer if your budget allows.

Should I keep ads running when my business is closed?

Only if the offer is still available and customers can take a useful next step. State when you will reply or fulfil the order. Pause ads that promise unavailable stock, closed booking slots or delivery dates you cannot meet.

How can I plan a CNY campaign for JB, KL and Singapore customers?

Start with separate service areas, prices, language needs and delivery or collection terms. Then tailor each message to what you can actually provide in that location. If you would like a hand putting the plan together, chat with Xwork on WhatsApp.
