Google to remove mobile-friendly label? Yup.

Google has just announced that it is doing away with the mobile-friendly label that appears in search results. Thankfully, for those of you with websites that at present ranked well on the SERPs (due in part to having a mobile-friendly site) — the search giant has also confirmed that this latest move does not mean that the mobile-friendly algorithm is dead, it just means Google is removing the label.

In its announcement, Google said that 85% of all pages in the mobile search results now are mobile-friendly by Google’s criteria and thus they decided to declutter the search results by removing the label. The label launched officially in November 2014.

With more and more research and purchases being completed online, it is imperative for every company to have a site that is mobile optimized. A mobile site is a site that is modified to fit a user’s mobile device (Tablet, iPad, or smartphone) and is easy to navigate without the user needing to zoom in or adjust their settings manually.

Generally, the meaning of mobile friendly is that your website performs well on a mobile device like a phone or tablet. However, you may also hear different terminology floating around like mobile friendlymobile firstresponsive designadaptive designseparate mobile website (or m dot site) and mobile apps.

If you do not see your site with the mobile-friendly label, there is no need to worry. You can use Google’s mobile-friendly testing tool and/or check your mobile usability report in the Google Search Console.
