SEO vs GEO vs AEO vs AAO: What Are You Paying For?

SEO vs GEO vs AEO vs AAO is a buying decision, not a reason to pay four monthly fees. Each label points to a different goal: search visibility, AI citations, direct answers, or tasks that AI agents complete. However, the work behind those goals often overlaps. Before you approve a new fee, ask what changes, who does it, and how you will check the result.

For a Malaysian SME, the useful question is not which acronym sounds most advanced. It is which gap stops a buyer from finding, checking or contacting your business. This guide helps you read a proposal, separate shared work from real extra scope, and spend against that gap.

SEO vs GEO vs AEO vs AAO: compare the work

Compare these four labels by their deliverables and proof, not by how many packages an agency lists. They describe overlapping aims rather than four official search-engine standards. In practice, one page update can support several aims at once.

Discipline Main aim Work worth asking for Proof to request
SEO
Search engine optimisation
Help relevant buyers find your pages in search. Technical fixes, useful service pages, local listings and a clear content plan. Relevant search clicks and sales-ready leads, alongside rankings.
GEO
Generative engine optimisation
Earn accurate inclusion in AI-generated answers. Research into buyer questions, stronger source material and platform-specific checks. Dated answers showing citations, mentions and referral visits.
AEO
Answer engine optimisation
Make a direct answer easy to find and understand. Clear explanations, useful questions and answers, accurate page structure. Relevant answer appearances, with the query and platform recorded.
AAO
AI Agent Optimization
Help an agent assess your offer and complete an task the user has approved. Clear service data, usable forms, task tests and, where needed, integrations. A tested task with a confirmed outcome and clear limits.

These are working definitions, not hard borders. For example, agencies also use AEO to describe AI-answer visibility, which overlaps with GEO. Ask each supplier to define the term in its scope. Then compare the actual work line by line.

Likewise, AAO has more than one expansion. Here it means AI Agent Optimization. Jason Barnard uses assistive agent optimization in his Search Engine Land article. Neither label is a universal certification.

Google AI Overviews are a feature, not another invoice

Google AI Overviews, often shortened to AIO, are a search feature—not a fourth optimisation package. They generate an overview with supporting links. Google AI Mode is another named search experience. By contrast, SEO, AEO and GEO describe work that people do to help buyers find them.

This distinction matters because a proposal can blur the product and the service. “AIO setup” sounds like a switch someone can turn on. However, Google does not offer a paid website-enrolment step that guarantees inclusion in AI Overviews.

What Google actually requires

Google’s official guidance for website owners states:

“There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”

Google Search Central

A supporting page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google also recommends useful text, sound internal links, a good page experience and correct business details. Eligibility, however, does not promise a place.

Do not buy a magic file

Google explicitly says that new AI text files and special schema are not required for these features. Therefore, do not accept an llms.txt upload or a JSON-LD block as proof that your business is now “AI optimised”.

Structured data still has a role. It should match the text people see. But a valid schema test is not a citation report, just as a submitted sitemap is not a sale. Ask for evidence at the level of the promised outcome.

GEO and AEO need evidence, not guaranteed lifts

Extra GEO or AEO work earns its fee when it adds useful research, better content or measurable monitoring. Reformatting an answer is work, but it does not create new proof of expertise by itself. Nor does a new heading guarantee that an AI system will cite you.

Read the research before buying the claim

A University of Toronto preprint by Mahe Chen and Nick Koudas studied 158,099 answers and 468,037 citations across two commercial markets. The study of AI citation selection found that retrieval explained about 32% of within-site citation variation for ChatGPT, compared with 2.8% for measured page properties.

Those percentages are not citation rates or conversion rates. In addition, the full answer collection was not exclusively ChatGPT. The findings come from the authors’ data and tests, not a Malaysian market-wide benchmark or a promised uplift for your website.

The sensible buying lesson is narrower: do not equate a page checklist with a proven result. Ask whether the proposed content answers real buyer questions and whether the supplier can show changes over time.

Ask what the monthly report proves

For example, a supplier should record the prompt, platform, date and linked source. It should separate a brand mention from a citation and from an actual visit. Also, repeat the checks rather than calling one good screenshot a trend.

Use our guide to tracking AI search visibility when reviewing a reporting scope. Keep leads and revenue in view, because a great-looking answer is not the same as a buyer contacting you.

AAO deserves a task test, not a futuristic promise

AAO adds distinct value when an agent can complete a useful, task the user has approved that it could not complete before. That is a tougher test than appearing in an AI answer. It also gives you a clearer way to judge the work.

Suppose a buyer in Singapore asks an assistant to find a Johor supplier that serves Singapore customers. The assistant needs clear facts about coverage, fees and the next step. If its task includes requesting a quote, it also needs a form it can use and a clear success message.

This is where the SEO vs GEO vs AEO vs AAO comparison becomes practical. Better service copy supports discovery and assessment. However, building a live availability check or a safe quote-request integration is extra work. It deserves a clear scope, not a vague “future-ready” label.

Separate readiness from a live integration

Start with readable service details, labelled fields and working forms. Then test the exact agent and task in scope. Some agents use a browser; others use structured tools or APIs. A site that works in one test is not certified for every agent.

Our agentic search explainer covers the broader idea. Before you buy, ask for something concrete: show the task, the confirmation step and the failure path.

Keep the business in control

Finding a price is not permission to accept a contract. Likewise, submitting a request is not a confirmed booking. Define which actions need human consent, and prevent tests from placing real orders without consent.

For a JB professional-services firm, the first AAO test could simply submit a test enquiry and check it arrived. It does not need autonomous purchasing to be useful. Avoid paying for a big promise when a small, clear task exposes the real gap.

Audit the quote before you approve the budget

A separate fee is justified by extra scope, not by a new acronym alone. Conversely, a single bundled price is not automatically good value. Read what the team will deliver, what it excludes and who owns the result.

Use a simple RM test

Consider an worked example, not a market benchmark: RM 3,000 per month for SEO, plus RM 1,000 for GEO and RM 500 for AEO. That totals RM 4,500 per month, or RM 54,000 over twelve months.

Now ask the supplier to map each fee to separate work. If all three lines describe the same four articles and the same FAQ edits, query the overlap. However, if the extra scope includes new research, multilingual pages or ongoing platform tests, assess that work on its merits.

For context, our separate GEO pricing guide examines pricing models. This comparison is not a new agency league table. Its job is to help you inspect any quote, including ours.

Check the term as well as monthly cost

CODE/RAVEN’s published Rank General search engagement is RM 2,500 per month with a six-month minimum. The page lists technical SEO, four blog posts per month, AI citability work and reporting. That is a minimum retainer commitment of RM 15,000.

Those published items combine SEO and AI visibility. They do not establish that every custom AAO integration is included. Ask for a written scope for agent task testing or development rather than assuming the package name covers it.

Choose the next step in fifteen minutes

Choose the next investment by locating the first broken step between a buyer’s question and a real enquiry. Use SEO vs GEO vs AEO vs AAO as a diagnostic, not a shopping list.

  1. Check discovery. Can a relevant buyer find your service page, and can search engines index it? If not, investigate the SEO foundation first.
  2. Check the answer. Does the page clearly explain your service, location, fees and next step? If not, improve the content before buying more tracking tools.
  3. Check AI evidence. Run a small set of real buyer questions and save the results. If claims are wrong or sources are weak, investigate the content and evidence behind them.
  4. Check the action. Can a buyer use the form or booking route? Test an agent only where there is a real task and permission to attempt it.
  5. Check the outcome. Record sales-ready leads and sales. Treat rankings and citations as supporting signals, not substitutes for business results.

For cross-border firms, include English, Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese questions only where they reflect your buyers. Then check the real answers in each language. A good English result does not prove that your Mandarin or Malay coverage works.

Bring your current scope to Xwork if it is hard to tell what you are buying. We can discuss the search and AI-visibility work against the published Rank General offer, then identify any separate development need. Contact Xwork with the pages and buyer questions that matter most.

Frequently asked questions

The buying rule is simple: compare work, evidence and ownership for all four labels. These answers resolve the terms most likely to cause confusion in a proposal.

What is the difference between SEO, GEO, AEO and AAO?

SEO supports search visibility. GEO focuses on inclusion in AI-generated answers. AEO focuses on clear direct answers, although agencies also use it for AI-answer visibility. AAO, used here as AI Agent Optimization, concerns agent-led assessment and actions the user has approved. Their scopes overlap, so compare deliverables before buying separate packages.

Is Google AI Overviews the same as GEO or AEO?

No. Google AI Overviews, often shortened to AIO, is a feature in Google Search. GEO and AEO are labels for optimisation work. Google says pages need no additional technical rules or special AI markup to appear in its AI search features, but inclusion is not guaranteed.

Does AAO mean AI Agent Optimization or assistive agent optimization?

Both expansions appear in industry use. This article uses AI Agent Optimization. Jason Barnard uses assistive agent optimization in his Search Engine Land framework. There is no single agreed term, so ask a supplier to define the specific agent, task and outcome included in its scope.

Should I pay separate fees for SEO, GEO, AEO and AAO?

Only when the fees cover distinct, useful work. Shared technical fixes and content edits should have clear ownership rather than duplicate charges. New research, monitoring or a custom agent integration can justify extra scope. Ask for deliverables and tests, not a guarantee based on the acronym.

Does FAQ schema guarantee more AI citations?

No. FAQ schema describes visible questions and answers; it does not guarantee citation or a Google rich result. Use accurate markup where appropriate, but judge visibility through repeated checks. For SEO vs GEO vs AEO vs AAO, no single file or schema block replaces useful content and outcome testing.
