ChatGPT Ads Are Live in Malaysia

ChatGPT Ads are available in Malaysia, but that does not mean every business should rush to buy them. The smarter question is whether the people you want to reach will see your ad—and whether a small test can prove its value.

For businesses weighing ChatGPT Ads Malaysia against other channels, the launch is a chance to learn, not a forecast of cheap clicks. Check access, audience and measurement first.

ChatGPT Ads Malaysia: Who can advertise and who sees the ads?

Eligible businesses can apply to advertise. But ads reach only people on ChatGPT’s Free and paid Go plans, not everyone who uses ChatGPT. On 23 September 2026, OpenAI announced the rollout in Malaysia, Singapore and five other Asian markets.

Eligible businesses can use self-service Ads Manager or explore access through OpenAI and its listed agency and technology partners. The launch does not guarantee account approval or ad delivery.

Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans are ad-free. Go is a paid plan that can show ads. So it would be wrong to say that paid users never see ads. OpenAI did not give a Malaysia-specific count of users who can see ads in its launch announcement. The size of that audience remains unknown.

Check access and policy before making a plan

Check your account eligibility, billing currency and target locations. Some new self-service accounts may at first target only their home country. A Malaysian account should not assume it can reach Singapore. Check your options before budgeting for either market.

Next, check your offer and landing page against OpenAI’s ad policies. Financial, health and legal services can face limits based on location and may need manual approval. The policy generally bans financial services and health services ads outside the US. It makes some distinctions for products that are not services.

Do not assume that a regulated offer can run in Malaysia. Ask about the specific offer and location first.

How do ChatGPT Ads work?

ChatGPT Ads are labelled as sponsored and chosen for their relevance to a conversation. They are separate from the answer itself. OpenAI states: advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. This is the platform’s stated separation. It is not a promise that your business will appear in an unpaid answer.

For example, someone might ask how to choose a project management tool for a small team. A relevant software ad could appear, depending on eligibility, the auction and platform safeguards. This is not a promise that an ad will show for that question or category.

Context hints guide matching

Advertisers can use context hints to describe relevant topics or conversations. OpenAI’s ads guide says matching also takes account of the context and intent of the conversation, the ad copy and the landing page. A hint is not an exact-match keyword. It cannot ensure that your ad will show for a particular prompt.

Write a hint about the problem your offer solves, and make the ad and landing page fit. For a scheduling app, you might describe a business owner comparing booking tools. Do not suggest that you can choose or see a person’s private chat.

Keep paid and organic work separate

An ad is paid visibility. An organic mention or citation is part of the answer experience. Buying an ad does not buy an unpaid mention. Useful pages, clear information and correct business details can help your wider content work. They do not guarantee an AI mention. Our guide to AI mentions versus citations explains how those two outcomes differ as well.

OpenAI has also tested sponsored agents, but those limited tests do not mean the format is open to all advertisers. Plan around the choices in your account, not an assumed branded chat option.

What does a first test cost?

For an account billed in MYR, OpenAI lists RM35 as the minimum daily campaign budget. This is a budget setting, not the price of one click. The campaign setup guide says the minimum depends on the account’s billing currency. Check your currency and the current minimum in Ads Manager before you commit. A campaign aimed at Singapore does not automatically use Malaysian billing terms.

A daily budget is an average delivery target, not a hard daily cap. With an unchanged RM35 daily budget, spend can reach twice that amount, or RM70, on one account-local day. It can reach seven times the daily amount, or RM245, in the Sunday-to-Saturday budget week. If you change the budget, prorating rules may change the calculation. Spend can also be lower.

Separate the bid from the budget

OpenAI recommends a starting maximum cost-per-click bid for click campaigns. A maximum bid is not the same as the price you will pay for every click. An auction affects delivery and actual cost. The available guidance does not establish a local cost-per-click benchmark, so do not use the recommendation as a forecast for Malaysia.

For planning only, RM35 a day for 14 days comes to RM490 at the daily average. That is before any applicable taxes, fees or other costs. It is not a promise that you will spend exactly RM490. It is also not a promise of enough leads to judge the campaign.

A capped campaign-total budget is the stricter control over campaign spend when available and appropriate. Before you publish, check the current account requirements, dates and billing terms. Set a total amount you can afford to spend.

Allow time for the landing page, tracking and lead follow-up. Someone needs to answer enquiries and check their quality. Agree on the maximum total investment, including costs beyond ad spend, before launch.

What do early results actually prove?

Early results can show what happened in one account. They cannot set a reliable Malaysian industry benchmark or prove that ads caused every sale linked to them. OpenAI says the early platform does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types.

One example is worth reading with its limits in mind. Agency Intelegencia reported results after six months for one US financial-adviser matching client. It said the cost per approved lead was about 35% below its Google Search benchmark. The agency also said its Google programme spent about three and a half times as much per month as the ChatGPT account.

What the example cannot tell you

This is one agency’s report about one account. It is not a Malaysian result, a sample that represents the market or a controlled test of cause and effect. The campaigns spent different amounts. The report does not prove the same result would hold at a larger budget. It also does not show that a regulated financial offer would be eligible in Malaysia. Use it to frame questions, not to predict your return.

In your own test, record impressions, clicks, spend, enquiries and qualified enquiries. Define a qualified enquiry before launch. For example, it could be a person in your service area who needs your product and gives usable contact details.

Divide ad spend by qualified enquiries to get an early cost per qualified lead. Add management and production costs separately for a fuller view of the investment. A lead still needs follow-up before you know its value.

Do not mistake attribution for causation

Use consistent tracking links and a customer relationship management system, or a simple lead log, to note each lead’s source and outcome. Check for duplicate enquiries. Agree how to handle a person who uses more than one channel. A lead linked to an ad may have seen your brand somewhere else first. That link alone does not prove the ad caused the sale.

Tracking depends on setup, consent and privacy rules, so review data handling before connecting tools. With few leads, one extra sale can change the result sharply. Unsuitable leads are poor value. A high early cost may mean too little data. Neither result guarantees what happens next.

Should you test ChatGPT Ads or wait and use Google Ads?

Test ChatGPT Ads only if you have confirmed access, an eligible offer and a small budget you can afford to learn from. If not, keep improving Google Ads and wait. The choice is about evidence and capacity. It is not a claim that either channel always reaches earlier or better buyers.

Google Search can reach people who express a need in a search query. A ChatGPT ad may be matched to the context of a conversation. Both may reach people who are researching or ready to buy. Neither guarantees a sale. Google’s own AI placements are a separate product. See our guide to Google Ads in AI Mode for how eligible campaigns may appear there.

A practical decision before launch

Consider a test if your current campaigns are stable, your offer and landing page are clear, and someone can follow up on enquiries. Choose a fixed review window and a maximum budget. Decide in advance what would count as a useful signal.

For example, set a minimum number of qualified leads at a cost your business can sustain. These are business decisions, not platform benchmarks.

Wait if you need the budget for proven campaigns, policy approval is uncertain, or you cannot track and follow up leads. Fix a broken form or unclear offer first. For more, see our discussion of Google and Meta ad costs. You still need to review the costs and returns in your own account.

Compare the same business outcome

Keep Google’s baseline visible rather than switching it off to fund an unproven test. Where practical, compare the same offer, market, lead definition and reporting period. Note any important differences in spend, targeting and landing pages. Even then, a simple side-by-side comparison is not a randomised experiment. It cannot perfectly separate the effect of each channel from other factors.

At the review, continue only if lead quality, cost and volume justify it. Pause if you reach the cap or leads are unsuitable. Extend only with an agreed extra budget and a reason. If the sample is too small, call it inconclusive.

For established paid-channel planning, explore CODE/RAVEN’s Google and Meta management. Check the current scope before assuming a new channel is included.

Frequently asked questions

The answers below cover the main decisions for a first test.

Are ChatGPT Ads available in Malaysia?

Yes. OpenAI began rolling them out in Malaysia on 23 September 2026. Access to the self-service Ads Manager depends on eligibility. The launch does not guarantee approval, reach or delivery for your business.

Do all paid ChatGPT users see ads?

No. OpenAI says ads are shown to Free and paid Go users. Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans are ad-free. So it would also be wrong to say that all paid users are excluded.

Is RM35 the cost of one click?

No. RM35 is the listed minimum daily campaign budget for an account billed in MYR, not a click price. Spend can vary by day. The auction does not give you a guaranteed Malaysian cost per click.

Will paying for ads put my business in ChatGPT’s answer?

No. OpenAI says ads are labelled separately and advertising does not influence the answers. A sponsored placement is not a paid organic mention, citation or recommendation.

Can I advertise financial or healthcare services in Malaysia?

Do not assume you can. OpenAI’s policies generally ban financial services and health services ads outside the US. They distinguish some other products and claims. Check the current policy and ask about your specific offer before spending time on a campaign.

How long should I run a test?

Choose a review date and spend limit that fit your business. Do not assume a set number of days will give you a clear result. Review delivery and lead quality along the way. At the end, say so if the sample is too small to decide.
