Your Google Ads Can Now Show Inside AI Mode

Google has expanded AI Mode ads to Malaysia and Singapore. If you already run eligible Search, Shopping or Performance Max campaigns, your ads can enter the auction for these placements. You do not need a new campaign or budget to take part.

That does not mean your ads will appear there. It means they have another possible place to show. Here is what changed, what you can control and what to check in your account.

AI Mode ads are coming to Malaysian and Singaporean searches

On 28 October, Google announced that it was scaling ads in AI Mode to ten countries. Malaysia and Singapore were on the list, along with Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan and the Philippines. Ads carry a “Sponsored” label, so readers can tell them apart from the organic answer.

AI Mode is a way to search through a conversation in Google Search. A person can ask a long question, compare options and ask follow-up questions. An AI Overview is different: it is an AI-generated summary that can appear on a regular search results page. The two are related, but they are not the same placement.

Google says AI Mode queries are, on average, three times longer than traditional searches. That is a global figure from Google, not a benchmark for Malaysia or Singapore. Google did not give local figures in its announcement.

For example, a customer in Johor Bahru might ask, “How do I choose an office air conditioner for a small shop?” instead of “air conditioner supplier JB”. This is an example, not a recorded ad impression. It shows how a question about a problem might lead to a search for a product or service.

The change applies to the existing Google Ads management environment. It does not mean every advertiser must build a separate AI Mode campaign.

Which campaigns can show ads in AI Mode?

Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible when Google finds a relevant opportunity. But eligible does not mean guaranteed. The auction, your settings, the user’s location and other conditions still matter.

Direct matches and contextual matches

Google describes two ways an ad can match. A direct query match responds to a search that already shows buying intent. A contextual match can consider both the question and the AI response when a useful commercial next step emerges.

Say a buyer searches for “commercial aircon installation Singapore”. A relevant Search campaign can enter the direct auction. For a broader question about cooling a shop, a contextual match could link a relevant ad to the answer’s next steps. These are examples, not promises that an ad will appear.

Google says broad match on Search, Shopping, Performance Max, and AI Max for Search with search-term matching enabled are eligible for both types of match. Exact- and phrase-match Search keywords can match direct commercial queries. They do not qualify for the wider contextual match for exploratory questions. Our AI Max migration guide covers settings to check before you change an account.

This difference is not a reason to switch every keyword to broad match. A tightly scoped account may have good reasons to focus on people ready to buy. Judge any extra reach by the quality and cost of the leads or sales it brings.

What about follow-up questions?

Google’s October announcement also says it is launching ads in follow-up questions, known as multiturn ads, in the United States. That does not confirm the format is available in Malaysia or Singapore. Treat local availability as unconfirmed until Google gives guidance for those markets.

What can advertisers control?

Advertisers cannot target AI Mode or AI Overviews exclusively. They also cannot opt out of those placements separately while keeping their Search campaigns running. Google says existing controls, including negative keywords and brand exclusions, still apply.

These controls do different jobs. A negative keyword can stop an ad from matching an unwanted search. It is not a switch that removes AI Mode as a placement. Review the search terms that generate spend rather than assuming a setting can isolate the experience.

Google can add its own AI explainer

Some ads can appear with an AI explainer. This is short text generated by Gemini that describes how an ad or group of ads relates to a search. Google says it can use the user’s query, the AI response and public sources, including the advertiser’s website.

The explainer is separate from the headlines and descriptions you write. Google says advertisers cannot write, edit or approve it manually, or opt out of it. Not every placement has one. Keep public pages accurate about your services, locations and current terms. Old details can mislead customers and may be used as input by automated systems.

“Paid advertising does not influence the organic responses generated by Google AI.”

That statement comes from Google Ads Help. Paid placements and organic answers are separate. Buying one does not buy the other.

Paid performance is blended into existing reports

Google includes impressions, clicks, conversions and cost from these experiences in standard campaign reports. The search terms report includes triggering queries in aggregate. Google’s current guidance does not provide an AI Mode-only ad breakdown.

So, if campaign clicks rise after launch, that alone does not prove AI Mode caused the change. Bids, ad copy, competitors, seasonal demand and match types can also affect results. Record a baseline and compare outcomes, but do not call blended data AI Mode performance.

What does the rollout mean for Malaysia and Singapore?

Google’s current guidance lists English for ads within AI Mode and AI Overviews. That is narrower than the languages supported by AI Mode itself. It is also distinct from standard ads above or below an AI Overview.

AI Mode is available in Malaysia and Singapore. Google lists Malay, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Tamil among its supported languages. But support for those languages in AI Mode does not confirm that ads within AI Mode are available in them. Continue to serve customers in their preferred language; do not assume this ad placement covers every query.

For a Johor Bahru retailer selling across the Causeway, the basics still matter. Make service areas, delivery terms, stock and contact options clear on the landing page. Check location targeting for Malaysia and Singapore separately. An ad will not necessarily appear to a user just because both countries are on the expansion list.

Google’s 28 October announcement says it is scaling AI Mode ads in the two markets. It does not give local reach, cost-per-click or adoption figures. Look to account evidence for those questions rather than guessing from a global launch.

Five checks to run this week

Start with an account audit, not an automatic budget increase. These five checks can help you see what is set up, what is working and what still needs proof.

1. Map your campaign settings

List your active Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns. For Search, note which use exact, phrase or broad match, or AI Max with search-term matching enabled. Ask whether each campaign aims to reach people ready to enquire, people still researching, or both.

If you want to test broader matching, use a controlled experiment where available. Agree on a decision window and success measures in advance. A small test is easier to assess than a change to every campaign at once. Wider eligibility does not promise better results.

2. Check negatives and search terms

Review recent search terms for queries that do not fit your business. Add suitable negative keywords, but take care not to block useful traffic. A Johor supplier might exclude places it does not serve. First, though, check how an exclusion could affect real customer searches.

Look for patterns in questions as well as short phrases. Ask whether a term leads to a genuine enquiry or only a cheap click. Note which queries are worth a closer look, then review them again as more data comes in. Search terms are an aggregate view; they cannot prove which placement showed an ad.

3. Verify the conversion you optimise for

Test conversion tracking before you give an automated campaign more reach. A WhatsApp button click, a submitted form and a completed sale are different events. Make sure your team knows which events Google Ads counts. Check that they fire correctly and that duplicates are excluded.

If sales close later on WhatsApp or by phone, connect qualified outcomes to your reports where practical and permitted. Our guide to first-party marketing data covers the wider measurement setup. Apply relevant privacy and consent rules before sharing customer data.

4. Read the page behind the ad

Check your landing page and other relevant public pages. Look at service areas, published prices, stock, delivery and contact details. Remove expired offers and claims you cannot support. This helps visitors decide what to do next. It can also reduce the risk of old information feeding AI-generated context, though it cannot guarantee a particular explainer.

For Shopping campaigns, check Merchant Center product titles, price, availability, shipping and returns against the landing page. An accurate feed is useful wherever the ad appears.

5. Separate paid results from organic visibility

Use Google Ads to review paid campaign results and lead quality. Separately, Google’s Generative AI performance report in Search Console shows organic impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. It includes breakdowns such as page and country.

It is not a report of AI Mode ad clicks, ad conversions or spend. Google says the report rolled out worldwide by 31 August, but a property may not see it if it has too few eligible impressions. Use the two tools to understand different parts of the journey. Do not use them to invent a paid-placement breakdown.

Paid visibility and AI citations are different jobs

Buying an ad does not make Google’s organic AI answer recommend or cite your business. Google says its organic AI responses and ad auctions operate independently. Appearing in one does not determine eligibility for the other.

It helps to think in two tracks. The paid track tests whether relevant searches bring leads at an acceptable cost. The organic track improves useful pages and checks where the business gains visibility. Neither track guarantees a result. Success in one is not proof that the other worked.

For businesses that want both, Rank General combines SEO and AI search visibility in one engagement. Our earlier look at the ChatGPT advertising platform covers a different sponsored format. Check current platform guidance on its market availability before adding it to a media plan.

Start with the campaigns you already run. If you want a second pair of eyes on your settings, tracking and landing pages, contact Xwork for a practical review before you commit more budget.

Frequently asked questions

Can I opt out of AI Mode ads?

No. Google says you cannot opt out of AI Mode ads separately from Search. You can still use negative keywords and brand exclusions to control when ads are eligible.

Do AI Mode ads cost extra?

There is no extra charge just to take part. Google says these ads use its standard auction and cost-per-click or conversion-based bidding models. Your actual costs depend on your campaign and the auction.

Will running Google Ads improve my organic AI citations?

No. Google says buying ads does not influence organic AI responses. An organic citation also does not determine whether an ad can enter the auction.

Can I see AI Mode ad results separately in Google Ads?

Google includes these results in aggregate campaign and search terms reports. Its current guidance does not provide a separate AI Mode-only ad breakdown.

Are AI Mode ads available for Malay and Chinese searches?

Google lists English for ads within AI Mode and AI Overviews in its current guidance. AI Mode itself supports more languages, but that does not confirm equivalent ad availability in Malay or Chinese.
